Legendary singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, fondly known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has passed away at 72.
Onwenu collapsed after a stellar performance at Emzor Pharmaceuticals’ CEO Stella Okolie’s 80th birthday celebration on Tuesday and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she sadly passed away.
A source close to the family confirmed the news, saying, “It’s a tremendous loss. Onyeka Onwenu performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday event tonight, and shortly after, she slumped. Despite efforts to save her, she couldn’t make it.”
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onwenu launched her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She went on to create numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”
Her successful acting career in Nollywood films earned her several awards, and she was also a dedicated public servant, serving as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
In 2011, she received the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Onyeka Onwenu’s passing is a significant loss to the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond, leaving behind a legacy of talent, dedication, and inspiration.
