The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed the call for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election, amid growing dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration among northern elites.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who previously served under Jonathan, has vowed to abandon his own presidential ambitions if Jonathan decides to run, citing his experience and ability to revive Nigeria’s economy.
PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the party’s support for Jonathan, emphasizing his reputation as a nationalist who can unite the country and manage the economy effectively. He dismissed concerns about the impact on former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, stating that Atiku cannot dictate the party’s direction.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) downplayed the possibility of Jonathan’s candidacy, with National Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim mocking the PDP’s alleged desperation.
Ibrahim argued that Jonathan would be easily defeated by Tinubu in a rematch, asserting that it was APC’s organizational strength, not just Buhari’s popularity, that led to Jonathan’s 2015 defeat.
Efforts to obtain a comment from Jonathan’s camp were unsuccessful, as his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, did not respond to inquiries.
