IPOB Bans Nigeria Independence Day Celebrations in Southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a ban on Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations across the Southeast region, effective October 1.

In a statement released by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, the group reiterated that the Nigerian flag should not be flown, and all Independence Day activities for students in the region must be suspended.

IPOB’s Directorate of State urged Igbo people, both at home and abroad, to avoid participating in any Nigerian Independence celebrations, citing the desire to actualize a sovereign Biafran state.

They emphasized that Biafrans should go about their lawful activities but refrain from associating with Nigeria’s Independence Day events.

Powerful noted that despite the involvement of prominent Igbo figures in securing Nigeria’s 1960 independence, the cost had been disproportionately borne by the Igbo people. He urged citizens to reject what he described as a “bloody flag independence” and instead support the restoration of Biafra.

The statement also warned parents not to allow their children to partake in any Independence Day events, as IPOB is monitoring the Southeast closely. They emphasized that any violation of the ban would be seen as opposing the Biafran struggle.

IPOB reassured residents that while there would be no public celebrations, businessmen were free to go about their daily activities.

However, families were encouraged to use the day for rest or quality time if they chose to stay home.

The group remains firm in its pursuit of Biafran independence, warning against participation in what they consider a forced unity with Nigeria.
