The United States Congress officially certified Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election on Monday, finalizing his return to the White House on January 20, 2025.
This marks the culmination of a contentious campaign season and a significant political comeback for Trump, who previously served as president from 2017 to 2021.
The certification, conducted during a joint session of Congress, confirmed Trump’s win with 312 Electoral College votes against Democratic rival Kamala Harris’s 226. Trump also became the first Republican presidential candidate to win the popular vote since 2004.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who oversaw the proceedings, emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, stating, “Today was a very important day… one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power.”
The ceremony was completed without incident, in contrast to the Capitol riot that disrupted the certification process in 2021.
Trump celebrated the moment on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing it as “a big moment in history.” His victory secures Republican control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, consolidating his party’s influence.

While some cases have been dismissed, others remain unresolved, including a state case in Georgia.
Harris, reflecting on the state of American democracy, urged vigilance, stating, “America’s democracy is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it.”
