Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Wednesday commissioned the Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners Legacy House, the corporate headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Abuja.
At the event, Gov. Yusuf donated ₦100 million to the Union and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of retirees.
“Pensioners’ rewards are mandatory and not a favour to them. Pension is not a privilege but a legitimate entitlement earned through years of faithful service, the Governor said. He added that the true measure of any responsible government lies in how it treats those who devoted their lives to public service.
The President of NUP, Comrade Godwin Abumisi, commended the Governor’s unwavering support for pension reforms. He recalled that Gov. Yusuf was honoured as the Most Pensioners-Friendly Governor of the Year 2024 and described him as the most friendly governor of pensioners in Nigeria today.
Abumisi particularly praised Kano State for settling ₦32 billion out of ₦48.6 billion in inherited gratuity liabilities, describing it as major relief to thousands of pensioners and their families.
Gov. Yusuf also reaffirmed his resolve to clear the remaining pension backlog before the end of his tenure, while sustaining prompt payment of monthly pensions. His administration increased the minimum pension in Kano from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 to cushion the effect of rising living costs.
In recognition of his performance, the leadership of the pensioners unanimously endorsed Gov. Yusuf for a second term. The President of NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, also commended the Governor for supporting labour unions in Kano and nationwide.
And in the buildup to the 2027 elections, Kano people should vote overwhelmingly for Governor Abba as a payback for his sacrifice for the State in less than 4 years. Good governance deserves continuity, and Kano’s retirees, workers, and families have seen what purposeful leadership can deliver.
