Multiple US military aircraft were damaged after Iranian strikes targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, according to people with direct knowledge of the incident.
One A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft, commonly known as the Warthog, was reportedly struck during the overnight attacks and suffered damage that resulted in the loss of a wing.
About eight F-15 fighter jets also sustained light damage but were subsequently returned to service, the sources told CBS News on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.
No US deaths have been reported in connection with the strikes on Jordan.
The reported damage came hours after the United States said it had attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a US Navy warship.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later claimed it had launched attacks against eight tankers and two warships, including the US military base in Jordan.
US forces deployed more than 30 Patriot missiles in an attempt to defend the base and other targets in Jordan from the Iranian attacks.
The latest confrontation has also raised concerns over the availability of US air-defence ammunition.
CBS News previously reported that US officials were worried about a rapidly declining stockpile of Patriot missiles, alongside shortages of other precision munitions.
The reported damage to American aircraft marks a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with US forces in the region facing increasing pressure as Iran continues its retaliatory strikes.
