Lionel Messi Declines White House Invitation For Presidential Medal Of Freedom

The Argentine football icon and Inter Miami star, Lionel Messi declined an invitation to attend the White House ceremony on Saturday, where he was set to receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The White House cited “scheduling conflicts” as the reason for Messi’s absence.

The ceremony, held in Washington, D.C., featured a star-studded lineup, including Magic Johnson, Denzel Washington, Bono, and Michael J. Fox.

However, Messi was not among the attendees, and his name was omitted when the 2025 honorees were announced.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, is the highest civilian honor in the United States. It recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, world peace, or significant public endeavors.

Messi was recognized for his outstanding achievements in football and his philanthropic work through the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports healthcare and education programs for children globally.

In a statement released by his management, Messi expressed his gratitude for the recognition. “Leo feels deeply honored and privileged to receive this award.

Unfortunately, due to prior commitments, he is unable to attend. He hopes to meet with the President in the future,” the statement read.

Currently on a break during the off-season, Messi is set to return to action next month as Inter Miami prepares for the 2025 Major League Soccer season. This marks the final year of his contract with the club.
