Norway has been plunged into mourning following the death of King Harald V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89, bringing an end to more than three decades on the Norwegian throne. The Royal Palace said the monarch died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital.
Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, and went on to become one of Europe’s longest-serving monarchs. He was widely respected for modernising Norway’s monarchy and presenting a more accessible image of royal leadership.
His reign was marked by a strong emphasis on national unity, tolerance and openness. Harald earned particular public admiration for his response to national tragedies, including the 2011 attacks, while his decision to marry Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, also represented a significant break with traditional royal expectations.
The king had experienced several health problems in recent years and was recently hospitalised after his condition deteriorated. His death came a day after the Royal Palace said he was in “very serious condition”, prompting Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon to cancel their public engagements.
Following Harald’s death, his only son, Crown Prince Haakon has automatically succeeded him as King Haakon VIII. The new monarch now inherits the throne at a challenging moment for the Norwegian royal family, which has faced a series of controversies in recent years.
