Russian missile and drone strikes targeted Ukraine’s power grid on Monday, resulting in at least four deaths and widespread emergency blackouts across 15 regions, according to officials.
The attack marks one of the largest in recent weeks, as Ukraine simultaneously presses a cross-border offensive into Russia’s Kursk region.
Ukrainian Prime Minister,Denys Shmygal, confirmed that the strikes severely damaged energy infrastructure in several regions. State-owned electricity operator Ukrenergo was forced to impose emergency power cuts to stabilize the grid, disrupting train schedules and daily life across the nation.
In Kyiv, explosions from air defense systems were reported early Monday morning, sending residents scrambling for shelter in metro stations.
“We have been under stress for almost three years now,” said Kyiv lawyer Yulia Voloshyna, describing the situation as “very scary.”
The Russian defense ministry claimed the strikes targeted energy infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s defense industry.
Since the invasion began in February 2022, Russia has consistently carried out large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities.
