The protests involved looting and confrontations with security forces. In contrast, the protests were largely peaceful in the south, with the Niger Delta opting out due to unmet interests. Northern states like Kano, Borno, and Yobe imposed curfews to control the situation.
In Borno, an improvised explosive device detonated in Kawori Market, Konduga, killing 16 people and prompting Governor Babagana Zulum to impose a 24-hour curfew. Yobe State also announced a curfew in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru towns in response to looting and vandalism by hoodlums exploiting the protests.
President Bola Tinubu met with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to discuss the situation in Abuja, where protests led to clashes and a fatal shooting by security forces.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s engagement helped maintain peace, although some protests occurred. Civil society groups, under the United Action Front of Civil Society, called for dialogue with the government, claiming the protests had achieved 50% of their goals.
In Benue, an uneasy calm prevailed as major roads were deserted, but civil servants continued their work, and transport activities persisted at major parks. Governor Hyacinth Alia appreciated the people for not joining the protests, indicating support for the APC-led administration.
The protests highlighted widespread discontent with economic hardships, with varying degrees of intensity and violence across the country. The government is urged to engage with protest leaders to address the issues raised.
