The Transmission Company of Nigeria has reported another incident of vandalism, where electricity lines supplying power to various areas of Abuja were damaged. According to a statement by Public Affairs Manager Ndidi Mbah, the attack occurred early Friday morning, targeting the 132kv transmission line and underground cable that transmits bulk power to the 132kv Central Area transmission substation in Katampe, Abuja.
The statement read, “Transmission lines taking power to parts of Abuja have again been attacked by vandals. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at the 132kv transmission line and underground cable transmitting bulk power to the 132kv Central Area transmission substation, Katampe, in the Central Area of Abuja. This has affected the supply of electricity to Maitama, Wuse and Garki.”
The statement further revealed that the incident affected eight distribution feeders in the Central Area, causing a disruption of over 60% of the power supply to Abuja. The company condemned the frequent vandalism of power cables nationwide and has sent a team of engineers to the site to quickly restore power to the affected areas.
The spokesperson urged affected residents to be patient as repairs of the vandalized cables are underway. The vandalism occurred near Menillum Park in Abuja, with unknown persons stealing 40 meters of conductor from the 132kv transmission lines. This has affected power supply to areas like Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, and parts of the Presidential Villa. TCN engineers are working to repair the damaged cable, and the company is calling on Nigerians to be vigilant and help protect transmission equipment.
In the previous year, the government reported spending N8.8 billion to repair 128 electricity towers that were damaged by vandals across the country, from January 20 to November 28.
