Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), has poured encomiums on his late wife, Maryam Babangida, describing her as the pillar of his life.
In his book, “A Journey in Service,” IBB shared fond memories of his wife, who passed away on December 27, 2009.
“She is the pillar of my personal and professional journey,” IBB wrote. He also recalled how the army emphasized the importance of a stable family life for career advancement, saying, “The army did not issue me a wife, but it made clear that having one would assist in career advancement. A stable family is a criterion for judging officers.”
IBB met Maryam, born Maria, in 1962, and they got married in 1969. He described their relationship as “predestined” and praised her for being more than just a supportive wife. “Maryam wanted to be more than a housewife; she recognised the importance of the home front in our mutual success. Throughout my career, she stood beside me,” he said.
As First Lady, Maryam pioneered projects that elevated her to iconic status in governance. Her Better Life for Rural Women Programme championed women’s empowerment, education, and economic development, leaving a lasting legacy. IBB’s tribute to his late wife celebrates her impact on Nigerian women and her enduring influence on governance.
