Nigeria Set To Embrace Electric Vehicles, Says Minister

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of the NEV T6 electric buses in Abuja, the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, emphasized that electric vehicles represent the future and that Nigeria is prepared to embrace this transition.

The newly launched NEV T6 electric buses aim to decrease reliance on fossil fuels while promoting affordable, clean, and efficient public transportation.

The minister stated that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s goal of achieving 30% growth in electric mobility, as outlined in the National Automotive Industrial Development Plan.

According to Senator John Enoh, the launch of the NEV T6 electric buses represents a major step toward transforming Nigeria’s automotive sector.

He remarked, “Many Nigerians see electric vehicles as an impossibility, something difficult to comprehend. But I believe that success often begins from a place of doubt and uncertainty.”

Nigeria is a vast and great nation. When discussing global players like China and India, Nigeria should also be recognized for its strengths and advantages. Those who embrace these opportunities are driving progress.

“Yes, electric vehicles are the future, but that future begins today. We must champion this transition now and work towards achieving it because we are ready,” the minister stated.

He highlighted that this launch is more than just the introduction of new buses—it represents a commitment to innovation, ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the global automotive industry.

Additionally, he underscored the importance of local content development in the sector to promote sustainability and drive economic growth.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to harnessing Nigeria’s natural resources for local electric vehicle production.

“Nigeria has vast lithium reserves, and our priority is to process them locally for battery production rather than exporting raw materials,” he stated.

According to him, this approach will not only support electric vehicle manufacturing but also create jobs and strengthen the economy.

The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, emphasized the need for more affordable vehicles to make them accessible to Nigerians.

“At NADDC, we are confident that the path we are following will lead to sustainable mobility. We are collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop the necessary infrastructure,” he stated.

He highlighted that the newly inaugurated buses are fully electric, producing zero emissions—a crucial step for both environmental sustainability and public health.

“Embracing clean energy is essential, and this initiative is our way of contributing to that vision,” Osanipin added.

The Chief Executive Officer of NEV Motors, Mosope Olaosebikan, described the unveiling of the electric buses as a testament to Nigeria’s readiness to embrace sustainable mobility solutions.

“There were doubts about the feasibility of electric vehicles in Nigeria, but today, we have proven that it is not only possible—it is happening,” he said.

He emphasized that this initiative goes beyond launching a vehicle; it marks the beginning of a movement that positions Nigeria as a leader in clean transportation.

“To anyone still questioning whether Nigeria is ready for electric mobility, let me be clear: Not only are we ready—we are leading the way,” Olaosebikan declared.
