Singer, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, due to his inability to meet the stringent bail conditions set by an Upper Area Court.
The singer faces charges of criminal defamation and related offenses, filed by veteran Fuji musician Saheed Osupa. According to the bail conditions, Portable needs to provide a bail amount of N1 million and two sureties in like sum.
The sureties required are specific: one must be the Chairman or Secretary of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and the other a property owner in a Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Ilorin, with a valid Certificate of Occupancy. Portable’s failure to immediately satisfy these conditions led to his remand.
The charges against Portable stem from a live Instagram broadcast where he allegedly defamed Osupa, accusing him of jealousy and sabotage. Portable claimed Osupa removed his song from music platforms to prevent him from receiving payments from Apple Music and Spotify. Osupa, however, asserts that these statements were false, damaging to his reputation, and intended to incite public hostility.
The court has adjourned the case, with the judge urging all parties to maintain decorum as legal proceedings continue. Portable will remain in custody until his bail conditions are met.
