Amusan Claims Third African Hurdles Title Amid Organisational Chaos in Ghana

Tobi Amusan once again proved why she remains the dominant force in African sprint hurdles after clinching gold in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 24th African Athletics Championships in Ghana.

The Nigerian superstar delivered a composed and commanding performance in Wednesday’s final, controlling the race from the opening strides to secure her third African title in the event.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller finished second to take silver, while fellow Nigerian Adaobi Tabugbo completed the podium in third place, earning her first individual medal for Team Nigeria at the continental championships.

The latest triumph adds to Amusan’s growing legacy after previous African Championship victories in 2018 and 2022. The world record holder did not compete in the hurdles at the 2024 edition in Cameroon, making her return to the top even more emphatic.

However, the women’s hurdles final was overshadowed by ongoing organisational problems that have drawn criticism throughout the championships. As of Wednesday night, organisers had still not released the official final times due to persistent technical issues affecting the competition.

Athletes and officials have raised concerns over malfunctioning timing systems, missing live updates, incomplete results without wind readings, and inconsistent disqualification decisions that have created confusion across several events.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding official timings, Amusan had already established herself as the athlete to beat after recording the fastest performances in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing gold in the final.

Speaking after the race, the Nigerian star focused more on the result than the missing time.

“First, I will say all thanks to God. I don’t know what the time is, but I got the win that’s all that matters and I’m looking forward to the next race,” Amusan said.

With another continental crown added to her résumé, Amusan continues to strengthen her reputation as one of Africa’s greatest track athletes ahead of the upcoming international season.
