Adewale Oseni, a commercial bus driver, is demanding justice after he was allegedly assaulted by a police officer identified as Supol Akeem, also known as Spider, attached to Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, Lagos.
On July 14, Oseni claims he was brutally beaten by Akeem, who struck him with an iron baton and used handcuffs to inflict severe injuries on his wrists.
Oseni was returning from buying food for his three children when the officer stopped him.
Despite showing the food and pleading for leniency, Oseni was reportedly struck on the leg and taken to the police station. He was later transferred to the Lagos State Task Force office, where he was sentenced to three weeks in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
The injuries he sustained worsened during his imprisonment, leading to severe pain and complications. Oseni asserts that the abuse has left him unable to work and support his family, exacerbating the hardship following his wife’s recent death.
The Coordinator of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, Ebenezer Omejalile, condemned the incident as police brutality and human rights abuse. Despite repeated attempts, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment.
Oseni is now calling for intervention from the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, demanding compensation and prosecution for the offending officer.
