The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stopped selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to major petroleum marketers that import products into Nigeria.
An official of the refinery confirmed the development to our correspondent, saying the decision was taken because some importers were allegedly blending petrol produced by the Dangote refinery with imported grades.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the refinery would no longer supply petrol to companies engaged in such imports.
“We are not selling petrol to those who are importing, since they are trying to blend our high-quality products with their ultra-low-quality imported products,” the source said.
Another source familiar with the development said the refinery was now prioritising sales to independent petroleum marketers and other buyers that are not involved in importing petrol.
“We are selling to independent marketers and others who are not importing,” the source said.
The development comes amid continued competition between locally refined petroleum products and imported fuel in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector.
