Lucky Hustle Wins Small Agency Of The Year For Second Consecutive Year

South African creative agency Lucky Hustle has been named Small Agency of the Year at the 14th WesBank New Generation Awards for the second consecutive year, strengthening its reputation as one of Africa’s emerging independent creative agencies.

The Johannesburg-based agency also collected several other honours at the awards, including Black Onyx for Small Agency of the Year and for its graphic designer, Kyle Anthony, who was named Top Graphic Designer of the Year.

Lucky Hustle additionally won Gold for Most Innovative Use of Social and Digital Media, Best Influencer Marketing Campaign and Best Use of Podcast to Promote a Brand.

The agency also received Bronze awards for Best Low Budget Campaign and Mobile Marketing Excellence.

Its Titan Tough campaign for Xiaomi South Africa emerged as the highest-scoring campaign of the entire awards ceremony, repeating the feat achieved by Lucky Hustle’s Legacy of Ludumo Lamati campaign at last year’s event.

The achievement means Lucky Hustle has delivered the highest-scoring campaign at the awards for two consecutive years with two different campaigns.

For founder and CEO Darren Morris, the consecutive victories highlight a broader shift in the advertising industry, where smaller independent agencies are increasingly competing with larger networks by combining senior talent, speed, technology and creativity.

The agency’s latest success comes amid growing scrutiny of the traditional agency model, with clients increasingly demanding faster execution, greater value and clearer business impact from their marketing investments.

For years, larger agencies relied on extensive teams, multiple offices and global networks as indicators of capability. However, rising costs, complex management structures and tighter marketing budgets have prompted brands to reassess whether size necessarily translates into better results.

Lucky Hustle has positioned itself around an intelligence-first model that combines strategy, design, content and technology, with artificial intelligence helping the agency extend its capabilities without relying solely on increased headcount.

Morris said the independent agency model does not automatically guarantee better ideas or results, but allows decision-making to remain closer to the work and clients.

“An independent agency does not automatically have better ideas, better people or better answers. But it can operate with a different rhythm,” Morris said.

“Decision-making can be closer to the work. Senior talent can be closer to the client. The distance between problem, idea and execution can be shorter.”

The agency’s approach also reflects the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the creative industry. Lucky Hustle has previously won Gold for Best Use of AI in Marketing, alongside recognition for Best Low Budget Campaign.

Rather than treating AI as an end in itself, the agency uses technology to expand the capacity of its team while maintaining human-led strategy, cultural understanding and creative judgement.

The trend comes as Africa’s advertising landscape becomes increasingly digital and competitive. According to the IAB South Africa and PwC Online Advertising Revenue Report, digital advertising revenue in South Africa grew by 21.5 per cent in 2023 to R17.7 billion.

Meanwhile, research from Yardstick described 2025 as the “Year of the Independent Agency”, noting that smaller, owner-managed agencies won the majority of pitches facilitated during the year, including major South African advertiser accounts.

Scopen’s first South African New Business Report also found that creative agencies participated in an average of 47 pitches in the preceding year, with an average conversion rate of 17 per cent.

Against that backdrop, Lucky Hustle’s consecutive Small Agency of the Year victories provide another indication of the growing competitiveness of independent agencies.

For Morris, however, the bigger question is not whether smaller agencies can imitate the scale of larger networks, but whether they need to.

“Perhaps that is the real story behind Lucky Hustle’s two consecutive wins,” he said. “Not that small agencies can compete with big agencies. But that they increasingly do not need to become big agencies to compete.”

Lucky Hustle’s next challenge will be maintaining that momentum as client demands increase and the agency continues to determine where to invest in people, technology and new capabilities.

The agency was established to bring together strategy, design, content and technology, with Morris continuing to lead the business as founder and CEO.

With its latest awards haul, Lucky Hustle has now established itself as a two-time Small Agency of the Year winner at the WesBank New Generation Awards, while its campaigns have also claimed the competition’s highest overall score in consecutive years.
