The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold an emergency meeting today to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the state House of Assembly. The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Lagos House Marina, aims to find a lasting solution to the crisis that has polarized the party’s ranks.
The leadership crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 members of the state House of Assembly removed former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in absentia, citing alleged financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness. Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as the new Speaker.
However, the removal of Obasa has sparked conflicting reactions among GAC members, party faithful, and the general public. Some GAC members, including Muraina Taiwo and Senator Anthony Adefuye, have expressed divergent views on the process that led to Obasa’s removal. While Adefuye described Obasa’s removal as illegal, Taiwo faulted the Assembly members for reconvening during recess to remove Obasa.
Musiliu Obanikoro, another GAC member, countered Adefuye’s statement, saying it was “careless.” The disagreement among GAC members has further highlighted the depth of the crisis, which has threatened to divide the party.
The GAC Secretary, Mutiu Are, has assured that the crisis will be resolved amicably, describing it as a “family affair.” Today’s meeting is expected to be a crucial step towards finding a lasting solution to the crisis. The meeting will be attended by top APC leaders in Lagos, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is also expected to hold the weekly Monday Executive Council meeting simultaneously.
The Executive Council meeting will also deliberate on the crisis in the legislative arm of government, with the aim of finding a lasting and amicable solution. The outcome of both meetings is expected to have a significant impact on the future of the APC in Lagos and the state’s legislative arm.
As the GAC meeting holds today, all eyes are on the APC leaders to see how they will resolve the crisis. The party’s ability to find a lasting solution will be crucial in maintaining its unity and dominance in Lagos politics.
