The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit drugs, medical devices, and other substandard products valued at N43 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The destruction exercise, which took place on Thursday at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area, was witnessed by representatives from security agencies and the Oyo State Government.
NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Shabba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that the products were voluntarily surrendered by compliant companies, Non-Governmental Organizations, and trade unions. She outlined that the items included unregistered and registered pharmaceutical products, with several raids leading to their confiscation.
Among the seized items were aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medications, and prescription-only drugs. The agency also confiscated banned substances such as codeine and narcotics, valued at over N48 million.
Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public involvement in combating counterfeit drugs, urging citizens to report unlawful practices to NAFDAC offices for immediate investigation. She further disclosed that recent intelligence-gathering efforts led to the confiscation of products worth N700 million during raids targeting illegal warehousing, sale, and distribution of narcotics by pharmaceutical vendors in Lagos and other states.
The operation also targeted contraband items such as unregistered soaps, tomato paste, and counterfeit beverages, with NAFDAC aiming to protect public health and promote compliance in the pharmaceutical industry.
