President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year, opting instead to focus on pressing domestic issues, particularly the aftermath of recent flooding in parts of Nigeria.
Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation in his place.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was disclosed that Tinubu, who recently returned from trips to China and the United Kingdom, has chosen to prioritize addressing challenges at home.
At UNGA 79, scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24 to Saturday, September 28, 2024, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in sideline events, and engage in bilateral meetings.
The theme for this year’s General Debate is “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
