Nigerian Government To Review Minimum Wage Every Two Years

The Nigerian government has announced that the national minimum wage will now be reviewed every two years instead of the previous five-year interval.

This decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, disclosed this on Thursday in Abia State, stating that the government is determined to prevent prolonged delays in wage adjustments.

“It used to be about five years, but now, in three years’ time, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha said.

This development follows calls from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an annual review of the minimum wage to reflect economic realities, including inflation, which reached 34.60 percent in November 2024.

President Tinubu had previously approved a N70,000 minimum wage in 2023, with an initial promise to review it every three years.

However, the rising cost of living prompted the government to shorten the timeline further.

The new policy is seen as a significant step towards cushioning the impact of inflation on Nigerian workers.
