China announced on Tuesday that it will introduce new tariffs on various U.S. agricultural imports next week in response to Washington’s recent tariff increase.
According to a statement from Beijing’s finance ministry, a 15% additional tariff will be applied to chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton. Meanwhile, sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products will face an additional 10% tariff.
The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on Monday to raise an existing 10% tariff on Chinese goods to 20%, further escalating trade tensions between the two nations.
In response, Beijing criticized the U.S. for its “unilateral imposition of tariffs” and announced its own countermeasures.
“The move increases the burden on U.S. companies and consumers while weakening the foundation of economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States,” the finance ministry stated.
Meanwhile, China’s commerce ministry announced plans to file a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization over the additional 10% tariffs.
