Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan made a bold return to the Senate Chamber today, accompanied by her husband, as plenary resumed after a one-week recess.
The affectionate kiss her husband gave her before she took her seat was a poignant moment, highlighting her determination to continue her legislative duties despite the controversy surrounding her.
The dispute over her newly assigned seat has sparked tensions within the Senate, with Akpoti-Uduaghan accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing, but the allegation has raised concerns about decorum and conduct within the legislative body.
The Committee chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun will investigate Akpoti-Uduaghan’s alleged refusal to comply with Senate rules. Meanwhile, protesters gathered outside, accusing the Senate President of silencing and maligning women. They called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, emphasizing that the sexual harassment allegation is a human rights issue.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband, High Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, has broken his silence on the dispute, urging the Senate to treat his wife with respect and dignity. He defended her integrity, stating that she was duly elected by the people who trust her leadership.
