Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of the United Republic of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region.
His nomination was confirmed today during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa held in Geneva, ahead of the upcoming World Health Assembly.
The extraordinary session was convened following the sudden and untimely death of Regional Director-elect Dr Faustine Ndugulile in November 2024. Professor Janabi emerged as the preferred candidate among four nominees, which included Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao of Côte d’Ivoire, Dr Mohammed Lamine Dramé of Guinea, and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa of Togo.
The nomination will be submitted for appointment by the WHO Executive Board during its 157th session, scheduled for 28–29 May 2025 in Geneva. If confirmed, Professor Janabi will assume office for a five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Janabi expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and vowed to advance the health and well-being of people across the African continent.
“Thank you for your trust in me. I will not let you down,” said Professor Janabi. “Your support underscores our collective resolve to build a healthier, stronger and more united Africa. As we face challenges ranging from infectious diseases and noncommunicable diseases to climate change and limited health financing, we must harness African resilience and unity.”
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus extended his congratulations to Professor Janabi and the Government of Tanzania, while also recognizing the strong campaigns of the other candidates.
“Professor Janabi will take the reins at an unprecedented time for the African Region and WHO as a whole,” said Dr Tedros. “We are grateful for his experience and expertise as we work together to navigate the challenges we face and position our Organization to be stronger, sharper and more effective. I look forward to his appointment and to working with him for a healthier, safer, fairer Africa.”
Dr Tedros also expressed appreciation to Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, who has served as Acting Regional Director during the transition period following the end of Dr Matshidiso Moeti’s term.
Dr Ihekweazu congratulated Professor Janabi, saying:
“This is a true reflection of the trust that Member States have placed in you. The African region has made important strides in health but also faces real and complex challenges. You can count on my support and that of all of WHO Africa as you take on this new role to serve our people.”
Professor Janabi’s anticipated leadership comes at a pivotal moment, as the African region continues to confront evolving public health challenges and build on recent progress in healthcare access, disease control, and health systems strengthening.
If confirmed, he will become the sixth WHO Regional Director for Africa and the first Tanzanian to hold the role.
