The Anambra State Government, through the Office of the Special Adviser on Community Security, has mandated all hotel operators and landlords to maintain proper documentation and records of their clients and tenants.
In a press statement on Friday, the State’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, announced that the new security measures were introduced to enhance the safety of residents and visitors.
Mefor emphasized that the directive is part of efforts to strengthen the state’s security framework and create a safer environment for all. He warned that non-compliance could lead to the forfeiture of the hotel facility and possible prosecution.
The statement read: “Directives for hotel owners – all hotel guests must provide a valid government-issued National Identity Card, international passport, or voter’s card to the hotel management. Hotel owners must photocopy these documents and submit them to the President-General of the community, who will then forward them to the local government mayor and the state government. Failure to comply with this directive will result in the forfeiture of the hotel facility and potential prosecution.”
According to him, landlords and landladies must obtain a form from their community’s President-General for each tenant occupying their houses or shops. Tenants are required to complete these forms using a valid government-issued ID. Landlords and landladies who fail to submit the forms to the government through the President-General will risk forfeiting their property and facing prosecution. The statement also outlined directives for President-Generals of Town Unions, stating that they will now serve as chairmen of the security committee of ‘Agunaechemba’ in their respective communities. They are responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the ‘Agunaechemba’ security outfit and must submit detailed monthly reports to the government. Failure to comply with this reporting requirement may result in suspension and possible sanctions.
According to the statement, the state government also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or kidnappings to the authorities, promising a reward of N5 million or more for valuable information. It emphasized that these directives are designed to enhance security and ensure a safer environment in Anambra State. The government called on all citizens and stakeholders to cooperate and support these initiatives.
