In a shocking display of aggression, at least 12 Nigerian Air Force personnel from the Logistics Command, Ikeja, Lagos, stormed the corporate headquarters and Oshodi business unit offices of Ikeja Electric Company.
The invasion, which occurred in a commando-like manner, left 15 staff members battered and arrested, including the Oshodi Business Unit’s Commercial Manager.
The Air Force personnel’s actions were reportedly a protest against the disconnection of power supply to their base two weeks prior. The disconnection, which resulted from a N4 billion debt, had severe implications for the base’s operations, including its reference hospital. Patients were referred to other facilities due to the lack of power, disrupting planned surgeries. The base also expressed concerns about the exposure of highly flammable jet fuel to soaring temperatures, heightening the risk of an accident.
During the invasion, the Air Force personnel allegedly destroyed staff personal effects, including phones, laptops, and vehicles, as well as office equipment and company properties. Journalists and civilians filming or taking pictures of the incident had their phones seized and smashed, with one person attacked.
The Air Officer Commanding, AVM Adeniran Ademuwagun, described the invasion as “unfortunate” and promised an investigation. The Lagos State government had earlier intervened, urging Ikeja Electric to provide services to the Air Force base. However, after complying with the state government’s appeal, the company cut power supply to the base due to the outstanding debt.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by military personnel and the need for a peaceful resolution to disputes.
